To the Civic Museum

A naked marble statue of a god with beard; perhaps it is a copy of a Greek original statue portrayng Zeus. It is likely that the statue was made after the style of the Greek sculptor Lysippos (4th cent. B.C.). It is possible to give it a date if we compare it to the work of Roman copysts of the 2nd and 3rd century A.D.

 

A marble male bust portraying Asklepios or Zeus.

It dates back to the 2nd cent. A.D.

 

A marble sun-dial with eleven engravins. At the top you can see a hole where the iron pointer (gnomon), to tell the time by the shadows, was placed

 

A marble male bust of a woman, lightly split. As it was found in a tomb near the lower part of the Appian way. Probably it dates back to the first half of the 1st. cent. A.D.

A marble double slope-shaped lid of a small funeral urn. The dead person is portrayed in the middle with dolphins on both sides. Probably it dates back between the end of the 1st century and the beginning of the 2nd cent. A.D.

 

A marble male herma, from a Greek model of the 5th cent. B.C. The head is straight joined to the prop; half way was a bronze support were the phallus is placed. The herma might be but in a road or crossroads as a protection for travellers and property.

 

A marble base found in the Emilian Forum; it contains an inscription as a memorial of the charitable measures taken by Trajan. On both sides is the emperor wearing a toga and two shorter people who may have received some grants. It dates back to 92-102 A.D.

 

A marble statue of a General or Emperor; the head and other parts of the body are missing. It was found in 1891. It has a body armour, decorated with the head of Ocean and a Triton between toe sea-monsters; there are three lines of plates placed on flat fringes below. A short military tunic and a short cloak laid on its left shounder are also part of its dressing. Probably it dates back to the beginning of the 2nd cent. A.D.

 

A marble portrait of a man; the nose and the chin are split. It was found in the area of "Severan Forum". Probably it dates back to the 1st cent. B.C.

 

An idealized marble portrait of a woman found on the top part of the city. Her split face is long and shows fine features. Her Greek hairstyle suggest Hellenistic models. Probably it dates back to the 1 st. cent. B.C.
